5K/5G Summer 2021
Dear Parents and Carers,
We cannot believe that we are in the final term!
Summer Topic: This term we will be looking at the Tudors. We will be linking our learning to a book by Patrice Lawrence called ‘Diver’s Daughter’. This looks at the adventures and experiences of a fictional black Tudor girl called Eve but is based on the true story of a character called Jacques Francis. We will look at Tudor monarchs and then at the Globe Theatre.
English: We will press on with lots of grammar so that the children will be well prepared for starting year 6 after the summer. We will look at reported speech, relative clauses, brackets, dashes, semi colon and colons and we will continue to review subordinate clauses and to revise what was studied in previous terms.
Maths: We are continuing to follow the White Rose scheme of work, so this term we aim to cover fractions, fractions of amounts, decimals and percentages, problem solving, measures, distances, 3 D shapes and co-ordinates in 4 quadrants. Children need to have secure times table and arithmetic knowledge so that they can start applying this to problems.
Most children are now secure with their times tables, but it is vital that they are fluent with these as it makes it very difficult for them to perform the complex arithmetic as calculators are not allowed.
Science: We are looking this term at living things and their habitats.
RE: We will be following units from ‘The Way, the Truth and the Life’.
PSHE: After Half Term, we will be following the Year 5 Catholic Journey of Love programme.
Homework: Children are expected to read for 20 minutes, at least 5 times a week. When they read they should record the date and page numbers in their books. When they finish a book, they must write at least a page explaining why they liked or did not like a book. There will also always be spellings and a writing task, together with mymaths. All homework is now set and completed on the google classroom.
It is school policy to set homework and for your child to complete it. The homework consolidates work we have done in class and encourages independence. Your child should not spend more than 20 minutes on any individual homework .
