Art and Design Technology
Art - Statement of Intent
Intent
At St Winifred’s the ethos of the school is to include and develop the whole child. We view Art and Design as a critical means of expression to develop individual interests, thoughts and ideas. Children are encouraged to gain confidence and express themselves without the fear failure.
Our topic-based curriculum allows for cross-curricular links with other subjects and enables students to gain subject knowledge, skills and understanding through exploration, investigation, creation and evaluation in order to reach and exceed their potential.
As pupils progress, they are encouraged to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Implementation
A clear and comprehensive skills progression document is followed for each year group based around the National Curriculum. Teaching and Learning therefore shows progression across all key stages within the different strands of art and design.
Art specialist language is taught within art lessons across the school, and modelled by teachers in all art lessons. The promotion and use of an accurate and rich vocabulary throughout school is planned into the curriculum.
Children experience educational visits to museums and galleries and are exposed to a range of cultural opportunities that widen their view of the world. They explore the different styles and techniques of other artists to enhance and deepen their learning.
Links are made where possible with the wider community through visiting artists into school. Opportunities for collaborative work are forged through events such as Art Week and whole school exhibitions.
Collaborative meetings between both staff and pupils ensure effective communication and pupil voice are taking place in order to enhance the art provision across the school.
Impact
Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. This data is analysed on a termly basis to inform and address any trends or gaps in attainment.
Children will retain knowledge and skills and build on these each year. They will be confident to try out ideas and understand that it is okay to make mistakes. Children will understand what being in ‘artist’ means. As artists, children will develop skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood
Design Technology - Statement of Intent
Intent
At St Winifred’s Catholic Primary School, we understand that Design Technology is an inspiring, rigorous, and practical subject that should provide children with a real-life context for learning. DT will allow children to solve real-life and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, and values. Children will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable citizens.
Implementation
Early Years Foundation Stage
In Early Years DT allows children to make sense of and gain knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live. Design allows children to think and use their imaginations – making and changing things for themselves. Technology allows them to put ideas together and make something for a purpose learning along the way the different possibilities or limits of their ideas.
KS1 and KS2
Through a variety of creative and practical activities, children should be taught the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed. When designing and making, pupils should be taught to:
Design
- Design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria.
- Generate, develop, model, and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups, and, where appropriate, information and communication technology.
Make
- Select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks.
- Select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles, and ingredients, according to their characteristics.
Evaluate
- Explore and evaluate a range of existing products.
- Evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria.
Technical knowledge
- Build structures, exploring how they can be made stranger, stiffer, and more stable.
- Explore and use mechanisms in their products.
Cooking and nutrition
- Use the basic principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes.
- Understand where food comes from.
Impact
Children will have developed the creative, technical, and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They will be able to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and the work of others.
