Summer Term 2022

Dear Parents/carers,

I cannot believe we are now in our summer term! Just like always, we have a lot of work to get through but still so many fantastic learning opportunities for the children to work through and embrace. Here are some ways to support your child.

Punctuality

Children should be in school on time in order to start the day calmly and promptly. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is on time so they are settled and ready for learning. Children should always be in class before the bell rings at 8.45am, gates open at 8.30am.

Homework

Your child always needs a reading book and can record their reading in their reading record book. Please read with your child for at least 10 minutes every day. Encourage them by asking questions and discussing the plot, characters and theme of the story.

Homework is handed out on Friday. In class, we will discuss whether the work is returned on Google classroom, or in their orange homework book, so please speak to your child about this. We will continue to focus on times tables and you will find extra work set on ‘MY MATHS’ and ‘Times table Rockstars’ –your child’s log in details are glued into their reading records. Homework remains being sent home on Friday and returned the following Tuesday (spellings can be returned on Wednesday where the test is on Thursday, but occasionally may be Wednesday).

Please encourage your child to complete their homework, supporting them where necessary.

Fruit

Children are allowed to bring a piece of fruit into school to have at playtime, but fruit does not include breakfast fruit bars!

Curriculum

Please see the topic web for details on this (below).
topic web 2022 Summer

RE

We will be studying Easter and Pentecost to know how the Church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and how we can celebrate this wonderful event. We will learn about the change in the apostles following Pentecost and reflect on times we need the help of the Holy Spirit.
We will also learn about ‘Being a Christian’, what this involves for us and how we can learn from the teachings of Jesus to help us in our lives. As a class, we will learn about the sacraments and how through these we receive Jesus’ love for us.’

Science

We now have a new area in school- The Garden. Here, vegetables and flowers have been planted from seeds and it is a great opportunity for the children to have this as they have begun to care for the area. We will be making the most of this fantastic garden as our topic is ‘plants.’ Already, we have planted courgettes, pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers, sunflowers and wildflowers. We will observe their growth and learn about the functions of a plant. Watch out- the next Monty Don, could be in our class!

English

Our main texts this term for writing is ‘How to Live Forever’ and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. We will focus on Root words and their meaning, spelling patterns and all children will have a secure understanding of how to use a dictionary and thesaurus.

History/Geography
In our exciting study of The Romans we will look at how the Roman Empire changed Britain and had a lasting impact. We will explore Roman food, health and diet and investigate the life of Ceasar Augustus.

PE

It is important that your child has a complete PE kit for the PE lessons. Dance is on Wednesday and outside PE or gymnastics on Friday. Children must wear a short-sleeved white top for PE, black or navy tracksuits bottoms, leggings or shorts (depending on weather). Hair must be tied up and please teach children to tie up their laces! Please ensure all items of clothing is clearly labelled.

First Holy Communion 2022

Children undertaking their First Holy Communion at Lady of Lourdes Church will be taking part in lessons after school led by myself.

Kind regards

Autumn Term 1 2021

Curriculum Map

Dear Parents/carers,

The children have settled in well, and we have already made great progress in establishing a fantastic learning atmosphere. The children have continually shown kindness and support to each other in their learning, and I am already feeling very privileged to teach such a class!

Here are some ways in which you can help and support your child in their learning:

Punctuality

Children should be in school on time in order to start the day calmly and promptly. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is on time so they are settled and ready for learning. Children should be ready to enter class as the gates open at 8.30am, with the latest to arrive at 8:45am. This has been excellent so far, and I hope this continues all year.

Homework

Your child will be given a reading book and Reading Record Book to take home. It is important that your child reads for at least 10 minutes every day with you. Please encourage them by asking questions and discussing the plot, characters and theme. It is also very helpful to comment in the Reading Record Book. Please note any words your child found difficult, as well as comments on their fluency and understanding.

Your child will be given spellings to learn and short maths homework each week. New spellings and Maths challenges will be handed out on Fridays. We will also be focussing on times tables and there will be extra work sent home for practice on some days. There will also be extra practise for Maths via our online portal: ‘MY MATHS’ – a separate letter has been sent home about this, which includes your child’s log in details.

Occasionally your child will be given homework in a work book to complete. This may be either a Literacy or Numeracy piece and it will reflect current learning in class.

Please encourage your child to complete their homework, supporting them where necessary.

Fruit

Children are allowed to bring a piece of fruit into school to have at playtime, but fruit does not include breakfast fruit bars!

Curriculum

Our topic for the first half term is Ancient Egypt. Please see the topic web for further details on this and what else we will be covering in all other subjects.

PE

It is important that your child has a complete PE kit for Gymnastic and PE lessons. We have inside Dance on Wednesday and PE on Friday . When ever possible, I will also be taking the children for a ‘daily mile’ run, but they do not need a PE kit for this.

Labelling of Clothes

Please make sure a biro pen is used to clearly label your child’s clothes, even hats and gloves and ties have labels to write on! Almost 100% of lost property is unnamed clothing. I am continually amazed to witness expensive unnamed clothing being sucked down into the whirlpool of lost property never to be seen by their original owner again.

RE

The RE topic this term is – The Christian Family

The children will develop their understanding that the church is the family of God and know that we join this family when we receive Sacrament of Baptism. They will learn what happens at Baptism and learn about the signs used and why they are used. They will learn about the promises made by parents and God parents at Baptism and develop their understanding of the Sacrament of Baptism.

Dates for your diary

Monday the 13th of September 2021

Meet the teacher Google Classroom Meet at 4:30pm – please log in to GC via your child’s portal, and click on the Meet link which is on the classroom banner. If you are not sure how to do this, ask your child, as they have had plenty of practise during this last year. It will be great to chat and answer any questions you may have, look forward to seeing you then!

Friday the 8th of October – Ancient Egypt workshop trip to Horniman Museum

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me on jmurphy@swcps.lewisham.sch.uk
